sarah531: ([drwho] these companions three)
[personal profile] sarah531
I have shared my thoughts A LOT with tumblr but not yet with Livejournal, so this here are all my thoughts distilled down into bite-size chunks

(I loved it. I REALLY REALLY LOVED IT.)

-I am SO HAPPY to see Clara as a teacher. It's the perfect career for her, as well as a nice callback to Ian and Barbara. I hope she carries on being one and we see more of her job, because I REALLY LOVE that even though she's the Doctor's companion she's not remotely in his thrall (never was, really) and has her own life and career.

-AND SHE'S TEACHING AT COAL HILL SCHOOL

-John Hurt was way funnier than I expected, I thought he would be far more Dark and Brooding than he actually was

-As much as I liked Bad Wolf (I can't call her 'Rose', she's not really Rose) I really, really wish they'd had her conciousness be all the companions, or all the ones they could get. I know it would probably have been a scheduling nightmare and required a lot of CGI, but I think they could have done it if they'd tried. At the very very least they could've got Freema, Catherine, Karen and Arthur to record something.

-I did like that what with her hair and her outfit she looked a bit like a cross between Rose and River, though

-I am, I confess, a bit disappointed that Bad Wolf and Ten didn't get a scene together, although all those sad, longing looks she was throwing him sort of made up for it

-Although I am more disappointed that Bad Wolf and Clara didn't get a scene together.

-Gallifrey is far whiter than it really should be

-The Zygons were pretty forgettable, but I loved the Kate subplot and that there was sort-of a Brigadier cameo in there.

-More cameos and stuff spotted by both me and on Tumblr later:

  • The junkyard and policeman, obviously

  • References to Malcolm from Planet of the Dead

  • River's shoes in the Black Archive

  • Jack was name-checked (And I heard Martha was too, but I didn't hear it! Was she? I really hope she was!)

  • The clock Clara drives underneath at the beginning reading 5:16, the exact time that An Unearthly Child first aired (!)

  • Four's scarf on Osgood (who loved Osgood? I did! She was such a fangirl.)

  • All the companions and many almost-companions (Rory! Amy! Susan! Cpt Magambo!) on the Archive wall

  • I. Chesterton listed as 'Chairman of the Governors' on the Coal Hill sign

  • Probably a hell of a lot more

-ALL THE FUCKING DOCTORS I PRETTY MUCH SCREAMED. And then PETER CAPALDI I WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT THAT WAS WONDERFUL EXCELLENT WORK KEEPING THAT A SECRET WELL DONE

-And then THE BEST ENDING I COULD HAVE HOPED FOR YES GOOD WELL DONE. Tom Baker, well done for almost managing to keep that a secret.

-So I'm guessing the next few seasons will be about Twelve (Thirteen?) trying to find a way back to Gallifrey? A thing advertised as a game-changer thaat actually WAS a game-changer? Bloody hell.

-And lastly OH MY GOD THE FIVE(ISH) DOCTORS. It's brilliant! And features (as well as all the Doctors bar Baker and Eccles) John Barrowman, Olivia Colman, Sean Pertwee, Steven Moffat, Russell T Davies, Georgia Tennant-Moffet, Ian freaking Mckellen and Peter Jackson. AND IT'S SO FUNNY. It's amazing.

It was a good day.

I liked Clara as a teacher, too, and the bit at the beginning when she goes to meet the Doctor and they high-five. Did we ever find out how Clara got unstuck from all of time and space though?

I was so surprised to see Tom Baker, I can't believe I didn't get spoiled for that.
